The Possibilities of Sainthood by Donna Freitas

March 29, 2010

This book was sweet, romantic, and absolutely hilarious.

If your mother has ever annoyed you to the brink of insanity and you just want to be treated like a normal teenager – you will know exactly how Antonia, the main character feels.

She has two events she is waiting for – her first real kiss and to be nominated for sainthood. I’m sure you can figure out which one is more likely to happen.

Will the first real kiss happen with the one she has been praying to get attention from? Or will the first real kiss happen with someone entirely unexpected – at least in her eyes?

Will mother and daughter ever be able to talk with each other instead of at each other? Will they ever see eye to eye?

I highly recommend this book for girls, who like an out and out girl book.

A Brief History of Montmaray by Michelle Cooper

December 20, 2009

A Brief History of Montmaray by Michelle Cooper is an exciting historical fiction story that follows sixteen year old Sophie, the sister of the future king of Montmaray in 1936.  Montmaray is a tiny island kingdom in the Bay of Biscay with a population of about ten.  The current king is crazy, the housekeeper doesn’t actually do much around the castle, the future king is off in England going to school, Sophie’s little sister prefers to go by the name Harry and refuses to admit she is a girl, Sophie has a crush on the housekeeper’s son Simon, and the king’s daughter is writing a brief history of Montmaray and runs the kingdom.  Amid all of this chaos, two German soldiers land on the island and one of the soldiers disappears suspiciously.  When the German ship, flying the Nazi flag, returns to pick up the soldiers, the officer in charge becomes angry and vows to get his vengeance on the kingdom.

This story has it all.  It is a mix of history, romance, the supernatural, war, and murder.  Pick up this book and step into Sophie’s world for a look at the life of a princess from an impoverished kingdom that is slowly disappearing.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

September 11, 2009

If you like a good ghost story, then this might surprise you – in a good way. It is definitely not like any ghost story I have ever read before. The story follows a boy from a toddler until he is a teenager with all sorts of adventures in between. How can a graveyard sustain a human anyhow and what kind of life would it be to live in a graveyard?

The mystery about the parents death keeps you guessing all throughout the book, since the murderer is still out there – waiting and looking for the boy. What is so important about this family to have to been wiped from the face of the earth?

I truly enjoyed reading this book with it’s interesting, odd, and otherworldly characters. So if you like books like “The Devouring” or any Mary Downing Hahn ghost book – this could be the book for you.

This book was the winner of the Newbery Award in 2009.
